I did my best, since no book was on or very near the desk, to pick the closest book. I walked to the bookshelf, hand outstretched, taking the fewest steps possible and the first book that my had, at waist height, touched was what I am going with. The floor is strewn with other books, but they have a lot of picutes and generally fewer than 50 pages.
The book is Lorna Doone A Romance of Exmoore,by R.D. Blackmore. I got it from the Buhler Kansas library sale for a quarter.
On page 123 lines 6-8 say: 'be of our council that evening, "and if the young maidens would kindly come, without taking thought to smooth themsleves, why it would be all the merrier,
And just for fun, the stamped due date card in the back of the book says that it was only checked out seven times between 1968 and 1988 and then not again at all. I bought it in 2005, I believe. I love to give good homes to orphan books. Even if they are nothing more than maudlin Gothic Romances from the Victorian world.
